Thanks for the nomination Roy Gilmour - limiting to ten albums is cruel. But if I had to list ten albums that shape my appreciation of music (which for me is linked to what I want to do on guitar) they would be: 1. Iron Maiden - Powerslave (that album is a monster. Awesome lyrics. Double harmony guitars on The Trooper etc laid the foundation for Dragonforce and so many others...I love these guys but this album is my fave). 2. Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet (I think New Jersey is a better album actually, but this contains Wanted Dead or Alive which is THE song that made me pick up guitar. The first real song I properly learnt) 3. Rage Against The Machine - Self Titled. (Tom Morello is out of this world. His stomping riffs are so powerful. Obviously the language isnt everyones cup of tea but the actual lyrics behind it are well worth thinking about. This was a total grenade of an album!) 4. Megadeth - Youthanasia. (This was my first introduction to their sound. That massive thick WALL OF RIFFS. Some of their best lyrics too. I still love this album. They have other faster, more technical albums but this one is still a fave. ps I have a 2 metre tall poster of the album cover that Im planning to put on our ceiling one day). 5. Steve Vai - Passion & Warfare. (Were just not worthy. Hendrix combined with The Devil Went Down To Georgia combined with extreme light and darkness. This is THE guitar album for me). 6. Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball (Heres the lighter side of my tastes. I love Springsteens classic albums...Born to Run, Darkness of Edge of Town, Born in the USA etc...but this much more recent album brings all that together with his folk roots side and the lyrics are just potent). WHOA ONLY FOUR ALBUMS LEFT - THIS IS CRUEL!! 7. Nightwish - Once (This is powerful. Epic, gothic, symphonic metal. The composition is phenomenal and the themes and lyrics are just otherworldly. If you havent heard Ghost Love Score you owe yourself the experience). 8. Savatage - Handful of Rain (Probably the first theatrical metal band. Never made it big but should have. The song Chance introduces what became their signature & the first rockband since Queen to experiment with counterpoint choirs at the end of the song. Spine tingling. Deep lyrics). 9. Ensiferum - Victory Songs (Finnish folk metal. Cookie monster style singing mixed with celtic melodies...hugely catchy and aggressive at the same time. Their cover of Uriah Heaps Lady In Black was life changing for me). 10. Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden (these guys take American Thrash and mix it with the European Power Metal...heavy guitars, dark themes, and then these huge sing along choruses of macho male choirs. The second disc on this album tells the tale of the American Civil War over three songs...its one of the most profound pieces of music I have ever heard in my life. I just cant describe that song. Check it out: Ghettysburg by Iced Earth. Heavy stuff - the lyrics are so challenging. Loving their newer albums and singing even more but this was profound). Well thats my list - I bet most people have only heard or 4 of these artists! Now nominate Blaine McLachlan and Dan Moth for their top 10. Heres the Nightwish piece for a treat: https://youtube/watch?v=JYjIlHWBAVo
