That last Christmas with my Grandmother, my aunt didnt want me to - TopicsExpress

That last Christmas with my Grandmother, my aunt didnt want me to decorate. They had broken grandmas tree, and didnt want to replace it. They had pilfered most of the decorations. I watch grandma get more and more upset over the lack of decoration. So my Brother, Scott, and I went to the store. We picked out a new tree and decorations. He then helped me find what other decisions were left in the garage and we put up the tree. I then direct the next few days making her her Christmas cookies. I was up at dawn every day, and in bed after midnight, chopping, mixing, baking. The house smelled of glorious aromas. Grandma ate 6 dozen pitzels on her own. I was exhausted, but so alive. For two days my Godson, Jj and his mother joined us. I taught him the family cookie recipes. Grandma was so proud, watching him in the kitchen with me. She loved him so much, and seeing him there helped lessen her confusion. She has Alzheimers, and her body was weakening. Eventually, she wouldnt be able to move on her own. Only a couple months after Christmas, she became chair bound and hardly responsive. I would lift her up, put her feet on mine, and dance with her. Looking back, that Christmas was one of the happiest of my life. Every night, before bed, I read the Christmas story from the bible to her, and she had me sing two songs for her before she slept. So, as I closed up the house, I sang. The acoustics there were wonderful. Always the same two songs. When you walk through the storm, and this one. As I wrote these words, lightening began to flash. I think shes putting on her own light display. Now, I think Ill sing her songs for her. Cherish the time you have with your elders. While you give them joy in the little things, they give you strength that youll never know anywhere else. Good night.
