The 1811– 1812 New Madrid earthquakes were an intense intraplate earthquake series beginning with a preliminary set of very huge quakes on December 16, 1811. These quakes remain to be the most powerful earthquakes to hit the eastern United States in taped record. These events, along with the seismic area of their event, were called for the Mississippi River town of New Madrid, then component of the Louisiana Territory, now within Missouri.
