...The 1st incarnation of Tony Williams Lifetime was just a trio and I never got to see that version. Then, at the 1970 Newport Jazz Festival, I got to see Tonys Lifetime with Jack Bruce on bass; Larry Khalid Yasin Young on organ; and John McLaughlin on guitar. Because I had a Press Pass; I managed to sit stage right on an Altec cabinet and watch and listen. Being behind the wall of cabinets; I got to hear a truer instrument/band sound than did the audience. Consequently, the collective power from this quartet had me full of awe. If you notice on this side Im putting up; Tonys bass drum still had that tight round sound from his Jazz days. Its the same sound I tried to achieve over the years. Needless to say that this band crushed it and had all the Jazzers there up on their feet and applauding when they were done. When the band members came off the stage; I asked Bruce for an interview. He more or less waved me off and went backstage. As I approached Tony; he reacted like he was pissed at me for approaching Jack 1st and followed Bruce backstage. Then, John McLaughlin. I introduced myself to him and asked for an interview. He looked at me and said, sure ! Wasnt that something !?! Lets talk over here. He was so glad Tony called him and got to play with Larry, too. That interview went for 20 mins. or so, and then Larry Young came over and I talked with him for another 15 or the like. Heres a side that had a number of the tunes I heard. R.I.P. Jack. https://youtube/watch?v=fDjz9BzJ4cM ...
