The 2014 AIA Northwest & Pacific Region Firm Award awarded to Mahlum Architects The AIA NWPR Firm Award recognizes a consistent pattern of excellence in design, practice and the creation of a culture that fosters these achievements. The award also honors demonstrated excellence in design that extends the boundaries of traditional architectural practice, as well as proven support for and a clear record of community engagement. The jury called Mahlum’s work as, “projecting a warmth and clarity of design through the use of wood design elements…The work is found to be very warm and accessible.” “I want to be there”, said one juror. Comprising the jury were Steve Dumez from Eskew + Dumez + Ripple and Larry Scarpa from Brooks + Scarpa, both recipients of the National AIA Architecture Firm Award. Joining them were Jonah Cohen of THA Architecture and Bill Neburka from Works Partnership Architecture, Principals of last years AIA NWPR Firm and Emerging Firm Award recipients, respectively. Mahlum Architects, of Seattle and Portland, is the 3rd firm to receive the AIA NWPR Firm Award, which was established in 2012. Mahlum was founded in 1938 and specializes in design for primary and secondary education, higher education, student housing, and health care. Pioneering Pacific Northwest architects Edward Mahlum and Paul Hayden Kirk defined the enduring fundamentals of the practice, creating a people-centered culture and encouraging community leadership. The current generation of Mahlum leadership actively upholds these founding values. Mahlum’s staff of 60 is led by Anne Schopf FAIA (Partner in Charge of Design), Gerald (Butch) Reifert FAIA (Managing Partner), Diane Shiner AIA, LEED AP (Operations Partner), Mark Cork AIA, LEED AP (Principal/Director of Higher Education Studio), David Mount AIA, LEED AP (Principal/Director of K-12 Studio), and Erik Goodfriend AIA, ACHA, LEED AP (Principal/Director of Healthcare Studio). In accepting the award, Partner Anne Schopf said, “This honor recognizes our staff’s talent, skill, and dedication, but mostly a healthy degree of tenacity. Without which we would never have achieved this humbling recognition.”
