The 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul IIs papacy is being celebrated around the world, including a special jubilee service in Toledo at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church. “The Popes anniversary is a source of great pride and great joy for us,” said Chester Przybysz of the Toledo Polish National Alliance. “It gives our people a sense of happiness and achievement.” Pope John Paul II was installed on Oct. 16, 1978, and is the fourth-longest reigning pope in history. Mr. Przybysz helped to organize the 25th anniversary Mass of Thanksgiving in Toledo, which will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 19 at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church, 719 Evesham Ave. Presiding will be Auxiliary Bishop Francis Reiss of Detroit, who is of Polish heritage, Mr. Przybysz said. Deacons of Polish ancestry will participate, he said. Music will be performed by a choir of area Polish Catholics, he said, and there will be a pre-Mass Polish hymnody. In Rome, there will be nearly a weeks worth of celebrations as the Vatican has invited the entire College of Cardinals to take part. One highlight will be the beatification of Mother Teresa of Calcutta on Oct. 19. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is honoring John Pauls papacy with the publication of John Paul II: A Light for the World, a coffee-table book with a foreword by U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, and The Poetry of John Paul II - Roman Triptych: Meditations, which contains three new poems, the first written and published during his pontificate. Liguori Publications is marking the jubilee with the publication of Dear Papa: Children Celebrate Pope John Paul II with Letters of Love and Affection, chosen from letters and drawings sent to the Pope by Catholic schoolchildren. The book, along with 10,000 messages and drawings, will be presented to the Holy Father Wednesday. A photo display of the Popes 25 years opened last month at the John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington,. In Cleveland, Bishop Anthony Pilla will preside at a service at 7:30 p.m. at St. Johns Cathedral.
