The American table-tennis Olympic team were so desperate to beat the Chinese at table tennis and never had. In the Beijing Olympics 2008, the Americans studied them on video and were most psyched up to beat them. Long story short, the Chinese killed them. The American coaches felt so demoralised by the huge defeat despite all their efforts and practice to beat them that they spoke to the Chinese coaches and asked, Do you do something different to us because theres something you are doing and you know that we clearly dont? The Chinese coaches said to the American coaches, Yes. We think the difference is this. You focus on weakness. We focus on strength. So if your player has an awesome forehand but a weak backhand, youd focus on getting the backhand better. If our player has an awesome forehand and a weak backhand, we spend no time on the backhand. Because we know that hes going to lose a few points on the backhand but we dont care because we know hes going to kill you with his forehand. The Chinese said we focus on whats already brilliant and we make it devastating. And we know that the player has weaknesses but we dont think its our job to make a rabbit swim.
