The Benefits of Christs Absence John 16:5-15 In todays text, Jesus continues His discourse with His disciples that takes place just prior to His arrest and subsequent death by crucifixion. Jesus had told them that the world would hate them and their message. He told them that, ultimately, they would face martyrdom and persecution. But first, He said, they would receive the Holy Spirit who would comfort them in their ministries and serve as their Helper and Advocate in the world. Yet the disciples simply were not grasping Jesus words-they were not thinking ahead. They selfishly focused entirely upon themselves and the effect that Jesus departure would have on them personally. Thus, Jesus says, But now I go My way...and none of you asketh Me, Whither goest Thou? (v.5). Peter had previously asked Jesus where He was going (13:36), but he did not ask with intent to truly know. He and the other disciples were simply concerned about themselves (v.6). Jesus now instructs them to begin thinking about the bigger picture: where He is going, why He is leaving them, and how His departure would actually benefit them. Jesus said, I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away (v.7). Expedient means to their advantage. Imagine that! Jesus was their closest friend, and He tells them it is to their advantage for Him to depart back to heaven to be with God the Father. How could this be? In the remainder of todays text (vv.7-15), Jesus describes the benefits believers would receive as a result of His death, resurrection, and ascension. Let us never become so focused upon ourselves that we consequently fail to trust in the perfect plan and will of the Lord. He always knows what is best! MDC
