The Bethany Project will host its second annual “Smart Start” back-to-school distribution event from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday (August 13th) in the Cave City Elementary safe room. The organization will have school supplies for grades K-12 for those in need; bags will be already packed and will be limited to one per child, volunteers said. Last year, nearly 200 children in the Cave City area received school supplies. A Melon Dash 5K run/walk fundraiser will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday in conjunction with the Cave City Watermelon Festival. The race will start and finish at the Cave City Community Center on Spring Street. The funds will be used to buy school supplies for “Smart Start.” The Bethany Project was founded in honor of Bethany Roebuck Etheridge. Its mission is to provide love, hope and care to the Cave City community. The organization also hosts a Hello Baby event in June and a coat drive in October.
