Johnson, the first Black woman to argue before the Supreme Court, was born on this date in 1882. Dr. Charles Richard Drew, scientist and pioneer in blood plasma research, received the 29th NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date in 1944 for his outstanding work with blood plasma. Dr. Kenneth Bancroft Clark, professor and founder/director of the Northside Center for Child Development, received the 46th NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date in 1961 for his research that contributed to the Brown v. Board of Education decision. Miriam Zensi Makeba, internationally renowned singer and South Africa native, pleaded with the United Nations to begin a complete boycott of South Africa on this date in 1963. Makeba said that a ban on arms should be the first action taken. Janelle Penny Commissiong of Trinidad and Tobago became the first Black to win the "Miss Universe" crown on this date in 1977. Merlie Evers-Williams, NAACP Chairman Emeritus, received the 83rd NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date in 1998 for her lifetime leadership in the field of civil rights and for her lifetime accomplishments as an author and business leader.
