The COOLEST thing happened at the beach here in Gulf Shores, Alabama today! Hayden Poff and I were exploring the continental shelf of the gulf today when we stumbled upon several smacks of comb jellyfish! We took the opportunity to teach 50 or so intrigued people along the beach a quick zoology/marine biology lesson! Instead of having nematocysts, the stinging cells in most jellyfish tentacles, comb jellyfish have colloblasts, which are sticky cells in the tentacles of ctenophores; therefore, comb jellies are jellyfish that you can actually hold with your hands! Needless to say, these incredible creatures were phenomenal conversation starters. It sure was awesome having the opportunity to apply some of what I learned in Principles of Zoology in reality and getting to meet several people in the process!
