The Capable Competent Child 💜 I was having a little chat with Jamsie whos two and half years old, in the reception, whilst report day was going on in the classes. J: Leefu has Tanzania on his bag. Me: He has the flag of Tanzania on his bag? J: Yes Me: We live in Tanzania J: Yes Me: Do you remember the colours on the flag? J: Red, green, blue Me: Why dont we google and see? So we googled and came up with a flag of Tanzania. Jams named all the colours and I asked her if she wanted to see flags of any other country, J: Yes. Red Me: I dont know which country has a red flag (how embarrassing), lets google it So together we found out that China has a red flag with 5 white stars and Cyprus has a white flag with green in the middle. J: Whats google? Me: Its like when you ask someone a question and they give you answers. Its a big search engine. J: Ok. Lets oogle 😛 I love these discussions with kids that show us how competent, capable and intelligent young children are. This is the #emergentcurriculum in action! Meaningful learning of colours, flags of different countries, geography, how to google, and being fully engrossed and engaged for over 20 minutes! 💜
