The Christian message should not be shortened to steer the whole doctrine of the atonement to the individual experience of grace. The result was that justification and sanctification came to be understood more and more in a psychological way, and the doctrine of the Church seemed to be of value only as a means of grace for the individual believer. So we must discuss the subjective reception of the benefits of the atonement by the individual believer. But only after the discussion of the church. For our great theme is the reconciliation of the world with God in Jesus Christ, and only in this context is it the reconciliation of the individual person. - Karl Barth
