“The Christianare saying that the Jews wanted to kill Jesus because he claimed to be God” Christians use the following verse to try and prove that Jesus claimed to be equal to God: - [John 5:18] - “Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.” In the very next verse, Jesus says: “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever he does, that the Son does likewise.” The fact that he cannot do anything of his own power negates the notion that he is “co-equal” with God. Again, Jesus repeats himself: - [John 5:30] - “I can do nothing on my own authority; as I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.” So, the “Son of God” is subordinate, not co-equal.
