The Congress has been decimated in Karnataka. The news of defeat hung so big on Chief Minister CM Siddaramaiah that he kept away from Bengaluru and reportedly went to an undisclosed, location leaving behind his security detail. According to party sources, Siddaramaiah had promised party president Sonia Gandhi 16 seats from the state. Unfortunately, the party got nine, with many of its leaders barely making it through. Even in Siddaramaiah’s home turf of Mysore, the party candidate H Vishwanath lost to BJP’s candidate and columnist Pratap Simha by a margin of 30,000 votes. It was rumoured that in defeating Vishwanath, the JD(S) played a decisive role by aligning with the BJP. While former union labour minister Mallikarjun Kharge won from the Gulbarga Lok Sabha constituency, former chief minister Dharam Singh lost to BJP’s Bhagwant Khuba.
