The Day of the Black Christ of Esquipulas was yesterday (Jan. 15). It is celebrated in many parts of Central and South America – and at LGBT-friendly Founders Metropolitan Community Church Los Angeles, where the black Christ in this photo was part of a special altar for the occasion. Before the Spanish Conquest, Indians came to Esquipulas in modern-day Guatemala for religious rituals and trade. Four hundred years ago they built a statue of Christ with skin color to the color of the native people. Since then it has darkened to black and many miraculous cures are attributed to it. Gracias, Rev. Alejandro Escoto-Reverend and Neil G Thomas!
