Painting Kolkata blue-white! It can happen in India only where political rulers are at liberty to get their personal whims and wishes imposed on public, like is done in Kolkata where city Mayor has announced waiver in property-tax for those getting their houses painted in dual-tone of blue and white, the favourite colour-scheme of the state Chief Minister. Already much has been spent to paint fly-overs and other government-buildings in blue-white, apart from ordering the favoured colour-scheme for new taxis. There can be some weight in deciding colour-scheme for a city like the ‘pink-city’ Jaipur. But such decisions and the colour-scheme should be decided on expert-opinion, and compulsorily through political consensus only. Otherwise it may adversely affect law and order situation with supporters of different political parties getting their houses painted according to preferred colour-scheme of their parties or party-mentors. Union government should intervene on misuse of authority in the state only because of personal choice of leader of the ruling party in the metro-city of Kolkatta.
