The Department of Oceanography at TAMU and FGBNMS have set up a Reson 7125 multibeam system on board the R/V MANTA. The multibeam provides high resolution water depth information by measuring the time it takes hundreds of acoustic beams to reach the seafloor. This past week we sailed 68 continuous hours of survey lines to map 89km2 at Coffee Lump, a bank about 10 miles NW of the West Flower Gardens Bank. Volunteer students and geologists worked 12 hour watches in teams of 3 and 4 to monitor the multibeam system and provide navigational guidance to the bridge. Every 24 hours water column temperature/salinity profiles were measured with a YSI meter to calibrate for water column sound velocity changes. We also used the multibeam to take synthetic side-scan imagery of a platform located near Coffee. After finishing our mapping of Coffee Lump, we stopped by the USS Hatteras wreck and took another image of that wreck.
