The Dept. of Indian Affairs readily found a practical means of effecting this change at New Germany – the Indian Act proviso that denied status to Indian women who married out. By the early twentieth century key landholders at New Germany were Indian women married to non-Indian men or the children of these unions. By actively applying this section of the Indian Act to Reserve 19A for the first time ever, the DIA with relative ease erased the legal Indian identity of a small Nova Scotia reserve.
