The Effects of Cohabitation Young people today are cynical concerning the validity and longevity of the marital union. Indeed, with fifty percent of all marriages ending in divorce, men and women believe its a good idea to try out different partners. Couples say that they need to kick the tires a little before settling down, says Dr. Brad Wilcox, an associate professor of sociology at the University of Virginia, and director of the Marriage Matters Project. But what they dont understand is that once you adopt a consumer mentality, you undercut marriage and open yourself up to marital breakup and unhappiness.
