The Evergreen Greenies Tri-County League 1947 Season Part - TopicsExpress

The Evergreen Greenies Tri-County League 1947 Season Part IV Before the split season break, the Greenies learned that Atmore was the toughest competition from the standpoint of talent. They learned that Booneville/McCullough gave them the toughest games and sported a winning record against the Greenies, the only team in the league with that claim. An All-Star game was scheduled at Brooks Stadium between the league -leading Evergreen team and a team of all-stars selected from the remaining league teams. Led by Atmore southpaw, Red Vickery, the All-Stars defeated the Greenies 12-8. The last half of the season started badly for Evergreen. Their nemesis, Booneville/McCullough, behind Coon beat the Greenies 9-4. Coon had beaten Evergreen twice, the only pitcher in the league with that record. Coon’s performance on the mound and contribution of three hits along with the three hits by Taylor pushed Evergreen into a tie for first place with Atmore. Next up was Atmore and with ineffective pitching by James Carpenter and Wendall Hart, Atmore beat Hart for the win despite Hart’s three hits. Evergreen had fallen to second place. A double header against Flomaton found the Greenies on their game. James Carpenter pitched the win and was supported by two hits from both Haskew Page and Ottis Johnson. In the second game, Edsel Johnson made only his second appearance on the mound and got the win behind two hit contributions from Cliff Harper, Wade Nobles, and Haskew Page. Two weeks after the mid-season break, Evergreen was in second place and facing their old nemesis. Booneville/McCullough. Following that game, Evergreen had a three game stand against a Frisco City team that had begun to win regularly. Edsel Johnson took the mound against B/Mc. Behind the four for four hitting of Warren Bolton, Johnson won his third game. The play of the game as remembered by the fans was a barehanded grab of a line drive. The leaping catch and spinning throw by Ottis Johnson to third when the runner broke for home sealed a double play. The writer learned of this from Mr. Waynard Price as he was being fitted for a sports jacket. Mr. Price told of baseball scouts in the stands for colleges and teams in the Alabama State League, a Class D professional league. They never missed seeing Ottis Johnson play in the remaining Tri-County League games that year. Edsel and Ottis Johnson had two hits each and Wendall Hart cruised from the mound. Evergreen won easily over Frisco City 9-0. Frisco City came back to win the next game 4-1 and James Carpenter won the rubber game as Evergreen won 6-4. Sleepy Hart made his first appearance behind the plate in the last game. The Greenies, winners of 3 of 4, took over first place after Atmore lost two to Monroeville. To be continued. Story by Steve Stacey, a native of Repton, and a resident of Monroeville. Born on the day the league was formed, Steve is the son of a former player at Frisco City and Monroeville.
