The FAI is reported to be on the brink of appointing Martin ONeill as the new Republic of Ireland manager. A number of bookmakers in Dublin have suspended betting on the odds of the former Sunderland, Celtic and Aston Villa manager agreeing terms to succeed former boss Giovanni Trapattoni. Newspaper reports on Friday morning say ONeill could be unveiled as manager as early as the middle of next week. Speculation linking Mick McCarthy with a return to the job has cooled. The Ipswich Town manager has consistently played down the prospect of him returning to the position he held from 1996 to 2002, and has backed ONeill to become the next manager. The Republic face two friendlies against Latvia on 15 November at the Aviva Stadium followed by an away game against Poland in Poznan four days later. The FAI is believed to be extremely confident of having a new manager installed before then.
