The Fallen 22nd August Eleven members of the Rhodesian forces fell on this day and another sixteen appear on the RoH during the weekend. 1967 – Lt Nicholas “Nick” Smith (aged 23), 1 Pltn, A Coy, 1st Bn RAR, KIA from gunshot wounds received in a contact in Tjolotjo TTL (MJ630070), North Matabeleland, Op Nickel. He had gone to the aid of WO2 Timitiya (below). He was based at Metheun Barracks. Nick was one of only five from the whole Federation to be chosen to attend the Sandhurst Military Academy in 1963. 1967 – WO2 Havahli Timitiya (aged 42), 1 Pltn, A Coy, 1st Bn RAR, KIA from gunshot wounds received in a contact in Tjolotjo TTL (MJ630070), North Matabeleland, Op Nickel. He was standing behind a tree firing an MAG when hit. Lt Nick Smith, A Coy OC, was killed in the same contact moments later when he came across to Timitayi. 1971 – Pilot Barrington Heard (aged 23), Thornhill RhAF, KOAS from multiple injuries sustained in a road accident at Guinea Fowl near Gwelo. 1971 – SAC Michael Sheasby (aged 21), Thornhill RhAF, KOAS from multiple injuries sustained in a road accident on the Gwelo/Selukwe road. (It is not known whether these two RhAF members died in the same accident but, it is likely) 1973 – Tpr Joao Mendes (aged 18), C Sqn SAS, KIA by a landmine in the Tete Province, Mozambique. 1974 – Cpl Gary Lloyd (aged 18), 3(Indp) Coy RR, KIA . 1974 – L/Cpl Walter Partridge (aged 19), 3(Indp) Coy RR, KIA . (Both of these 3 (Indp) Coy soldiers died in a landmine explosion on the Bveke-Mukumbura loop road, Kandeya TTL, Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane (US688695)and Rfn Michael Plant passed away the next day) 1977 – DSA K. Pasipanoda, Kp Prtn Intaf, DOAS. 1978 – DSA Johannes Tarugarira, Kp Prtn Intaf, DOAS. 1978- Pte Christopher Tazvivinga, D Coy, 9th Bn RR, DOAS. 1980 – Cst Wellington Dzorwa, SU BSAP (ZRP), KOAS in a road accident in the Mashaba area. The Fallen 23rd August 1967 – Lt Kenneth “Ken” Peirson, E Coy, 1st Bn RAR, KOAS by friendly fire in the Tjolotjo area, Bulalimamangwe district, Matabeleland, Op Nickel. He was commanding several ambushes whilst looking for the ZIPRA Lithuli gang, who were responsible for the deaths of Lt N Smith and CSM Timitayi the previous day. He left an ambush position to investigate firing a short distance away and was sadly mistaken for the enemy. 1967 – L/Cpl Cosmos Mushure (aged 26), E Coy, 1st Bn RAR, KIA. 1967 – PO Spencer Thomas (aged 23), Dog Sec BSAP, KIA. (Both Cosmos and Spencer, above, were killed in a contact during Op Nickel, Northern Matabeleland. Their platoon was getting ready to spend the night near a terrorist camp when they were fired on. Spencer was one of two BSAP dog handlers attached to 1RAR at the time. Spencers dog, Leon, disappeared during the action and was presumed dead. Leon was found a month later, forty miles away at Pumula Mission, where he was eventually caught and restored to full health and would continue to see service in the bush. Spencer was a fourth generation Rhodesian and the sixth member of his family to die for their country - his great-grandfather a pioneering missionary in Rhodesia; another had died at the hands of slavers in the early days in the Zambezi Valley, one was killed with Alan Wilsons Patrol at Shangani and three had died in the two World Wars.) 1974 - Rfn Michael Plant (aged 21), 3(Indp) Coy RR, KIA by a landmine on the Bveke-Mukumbura loop road, Kandeya TTL, Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane (US688695). Mike died a day after the incident that claimed the lives of Walter Partridge and Gary Lloyd. 1977 – Cpl Gary ODriscoll, 1 Cdo, 1st Bn RLI, KIA. Gary, together with Billy Wiggill, wrote an ode/eulogy, called “Song of the 28th” to commemorate the three fallen 1 Cdo men of 28 February 1976. 1977 – Rfn Lawrence Shakespeare, 2(Indp) Coy RR, KIA in a landmine explosion. Lawrence was driving a mine-detection vehicle called a “Pookie” at the time. 1979 – L/Cpl Aleck Chingarande, 3 Sqn RhE, KIA from shrapnel wounds sustained in a CT action. 1979 – Cst Abisai Kufazvineyi (aged 24), E Tp, SU BSAP, KOAS. 1979 – Cst Caleb Kunatsa (aged 27), E Tp, SU BSAP, KOAS. 1979 – Cst Michael Maranduse (aged 26), E Tp, SU BSAP, KOAS. (All three policemen above were killed in a vehicle accident just outside Inyazura.) The Fallen 24h August 1974 – DA recruit Stephen Mufachiya (aged 25), Regular Intaf, KIA from gunshot wounds in an ambush on the Chironga Mission Road, Kandeya TTL, Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane (US560599). 1977 – WO2 James “Jim” Cross, NS RIC, KIA in a contact near Mashoko Mission whilst attached to a BSAP Special Branch team. He was, together with elements of D Coy RAR, in a sweep line after a contact when he was shot by a wounded CT. An RAR soldier immediately killed the CT. 1977 – FR James Reid (aged 37), PR BSAP, KIA in a contact, Bikita TTL, Op Repulse whilst based at Mashaba. 1978 – L/Cpl Rungwe Mufaro (aged 19), 1 Sqn RhE, KOAS in an accidental explosion. 1979 – WO2 Thomas Clarke, Army, DOAS. 1980 – L/SO Eric Smith (aged 20), SU BSAP/ZRP, KIA in an ambush in Mtoko.
