The Good Word For Today: DIFFERENT/DIFFERENCE July 29, 2013 Different/Difference: Not the same; separate; distinct; out of the ordinary; unusual; (making a difference): to be important, to matter. Jude 1:22 “And of some, have compassion, making a difference.” Yesterday’s Good Word for Today was Compassion. Unless compassion moves beyond the emotional concern to the point of active concern, you will not make a difference. It has been said that, “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions!” I say that only to stress the importance of putting your care into action, and each of us have a different ability to act. The widow was remembered for her mite, not because her gift was large; she was recognized for giving all she had. Exodus 2:6 “When she had opened it, she saw the child: and behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, this is one of the Hebrews’ children.” (Compassion saved the life of Moses) 1 Samuel 23:21 “And Saul said, Blessed be ye of the Lord; for ye have compassion on me.” (Saul commended the Ziphites for expressing their compassion for him by exposing his enemy) Matthew 18:27 “Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.” (Master forgave debt of servant out of compassion) Matthew 18:33 “Shouldst not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow-servant, even as I had pity on thee?” (Compassion received did not result in compassion to others, this was compassion that did not make a difference) Luke 10:33 “But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,” (Jewish religious leaders passed by this beaten Jewish traveler, but the Samaritan, “and Jews have no dealings with Samaritans” had compassion and paid for his care at an inn, and promised to cover any additional costs when he passed that way again) Luke 15:20 “And he (Prodigal Son) arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.” (A father’s compassion restored a wayward son) Let us consider how to put the compassion we feel into action to the benefit of any and all we have a means to help in their time of weakness or distress. Let us make a difference, lest we be found just to take up space as we wander through this life to no one’s benefit but ourselves.
