The Heat is on in Saigon! I mean that literally- I came down with a temperature when I arrived here for a stint a few days ago. Happy to report I am feeling better now after some much needed rest. I have a short stint here so looking to absorbing some of the sights and sounds. The city is a strange one..electrifying but cannot be considered attractive. It does look better at night than it does in the day...a good analogy would be going to bed with Hugh Jackman and waking up next to William Hague! I had a look around the War Remnants Museum yesterday, whilst clearly and arguably understandably, the stance taken by the Museum is clearly Anti-War, depicting some incredibly emotional and disturbing images of Prisoners of War, War crimes committed against the Vietnamese citizens by the Americans and some heart rending shots of young people. Descendants of the soldiers having been contaminated with Agent Orange, paying the price as always the innocent do, the pictures showed people born with various physical and emotional disfigurements, having been passed on to them from their parents. It was definitely an essential visit... On a brighter moment.. went to the local cinema and watched Planet of the Apes-an amazing film! I loved the original but this one I feel surpasses it. Full of fantastic effects and emotion. Rounded the day off with a drink at a local Hotel Bar; I was drawn in by the sight of a four piece Vietnamese band. A young quartet, they played a great set of not only Vietnamese songs but Rihanna and the Spice Girls. Given I was the Token English there for the night, I mouthed the words along to great enthusiasm from the band. At one point, it looked like they gestured I come and join them at front-I think they were joking but I declined anyway;I wanted the bar to keep their customers for the evening haha! Currently catching up on some work. As my time in Nam begins to draw to a close, I cannot believe how quickly it has gone. Went through a home sickness stage for a few days but it was nice to ring and speak to the family and Amanda Barnett and Charlotte Penny yesterday ;) To answer a pressing question whilst I am here...(to my knowledge) there is currently no Mr Saigon nor am I planning to leave a secret Mr Saigon over here for him to turn up in Blighty years later!!!!!
