The Hebrew Prophets - Wisdom Literature / Notes From Saturday Night 5pm Service I. The Wisdom Literature A. Job --- Suffering Job 1:6-8 6Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. 7And the LORD said to Satan, From where do you come? So Satan answered the LORD and said, From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it. 8Then the LORD said to Satan, Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? Job 42:10-12 10And the LORD restored Jobs losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before. 11Then all his brothers, all his sisters, and all those who had been his acquaintances before, came to him and ate food with him in his house; and they consoled him and comforted him for all the adversity that the LORD had brought upon him. Each one gave him a piece of silver and each a ring of gold. 12Now the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; for he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. B. Psalms --- Revelation of God Psalms 121:1-8 1I will lift up my eyes to the hills--From whence comes my help? 2My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. 3He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. 4Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5The LORD is your keeper; The LORD is your shade at your right hand. 6The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. 7The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. 8The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore. Psalms 130:1-8 1Out of the depths I have cried to You, O LORD; 2Lord, hear my voice! Let Your ears be attentive To the voice of my supplications. 3If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? 4But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared. 5I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, And in His word I do hope. 6My soul waits for the Lord More than those who watch for the morning--Yes, more than those who watch for the morning. 7O Israel, hope in the LORD; For with the LORD there is mercy, And with Him is abundant redemption. 8And He shall redeem Israel From all his iniquities. C. Proverbs --- Pathway to success and contentment Proverbs 1:7 7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 2:5 5Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. Proverbs 10:27 27The fear of the LORD prolongs days, But the years of the wicked will be shortened. Proverbs 15:33 33The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom, And before honor is humility. Proverbs 19:23 23The fear of the LORD leads to life, And he who has it will abide in satisfaction; He will not be visited with evil. Proverbs 22:4 4By humility and the fear of the LORD Are riches and honor and life. D. Ecclesiastes --- Priority Assessment Ecclesiastes 2:10-11 10Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, For my heart rejoiced in all my labor; And this was my reward from all my labor. 11Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done And on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun. Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 13Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is mans all. 14For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.
