The Imperial administration of German Samoa presents a tantalising - TopicsExpress

The Imperial administration of German Samoa presents a tantalising insight in to a period of Samoan history, where the English language was firmly pushed to one side. As a principally English speaking Archivist with Samoan heritage, Uili Fecteau feels distinctly like an observer peering in from the periphery when he works with the German Samoan collection held at Archives New Zealand, Wellington, and the Samoan Archives, Apia. There are pieces of correspondence from Chiefs of villages and districts, written in the most beautiful script, that contain their reactions to local and international events... Its like a historical treasure trove, where digitisation is a tool, but the German and Samoan languages are the keys. Come, listen, and discuss the potential of the Samoan language to unlock hidden histories Date: 27 May, 2014 Time: 12.10pm – 1pm. Cost: Free.
