The Kru People Of Liberia Help Build Ghana-----Rev. Blamo. Ghana: Takoradi Harbor Was Build By Liberian Kru Ferries-----Rev. Blamo. The Kru from Liberia who worked as mariners and as workers in British colonies On the Gold Coast. built the Takoradi harbor in Ghana in the late 1920’s and then provided the bulk of the harbor labor force, • worked on cocoa plantations and in gold mines, • served the British as domestic staff. Krumen were accommodating workers ready to assume almost any task for a fee. (Martin 1982:4). Ludlam’s 1825 description of the cycle of Krumen labor held throughout the colonial period.: Krumen would grow up in monolingual villages on or near the coast. Then, as young men—Ludlam (p. 49) describes them as being seldom less than fifteen years, or more than forty—they would join work gangs, leave their homes, and go off to work elsewhere on the African coast. Once a man left home for employment, ... in eighteen months or two years, a sufficient stock ... [of goods] having been collected, the Krooman returns home with his wealth. A certain portion is given to the head men of the town; all his relations and friends partake of his bounty ...; his mother, if living, has a handsome present. (p. 49) Further, the money and especially the cloth that a Kruman brought home would enable him to acquire wives. After a Kruman had stayed home for eighteen months, two year, or the like, the pattern would recur, with the Kruman setting out again. Once a Kruman reached middle age, he would return to his village to stay. [Apart from Freetown,] “it appears that the bulk of Kru laboring activities was concentrated in . . . [Nigeria] up to the First World War and gradually shifted up the coast to Ghana where Krumen had been employed early in the century in the gold mines, and later worked in Accra, Sekondi, and even Kumasi” (Martin 1982:3-4). ND: Today The Kru Are Not Consider To work In Ghana Because They Are Not Ghanaians But Yet They Help Build Ghana.-----Rev. Blamo.
