EBE Elger Bay Elementary. All elementary schools start at 9:00 am so our screening team should be there around 8:30 or 8:45 latest. Our two middle schools are both very early starts 7:30 am. All K’s are Kindergarten and are usually only one or two classes. Exception wtill be Sept 10th where we will do both Twin Cities and Cedarhomes Kindergartens. Background: Thanks to Helen Keller’s challenge to the Lions to be her knights against blindness (we also do hearing), we do many projects under the banner of Sight and Hearing. Several years ago I offered our help to the School District in accomplishing the annual screening required by the State in grades 1-5 and 7 (the grades have changed over the years). So our program has been a win-win situation and our members look forward to working with the kids, They are so great to work with and the effort becomes addictive with usually one or two “Art Linkletter” type stories every year. We train our members to use the Snellen eye charts to screen the kids with normal techniques. Whenever we see any child who is uncomfortable with the process, squinting, or just not capable of reading the chart to our desired level, we turn that person over to our “expert” who is a retired ophthalmologist for a thorough check up. We do the same thing on the hearing side where we have a retired speech pathologist in our club, but the school district also provides ample coverage there, too. We do provide one or two people to work on the hearing program. Volunteers are always welcome and needed. Contact Roy Lesher, (360) 387-0483 of rlesher88@gmail
