The Lyceum Pirates have beefed up their brain trust for the upcoming NCAA Season 89 basketball wars. The Intramuros school added Barangay Ginebra San Miguel coach Alfrancis Chua as team consultant to help coach Bonnie Tan get the team ready for the upcoming season. “We need a high-profile coach who will be respected by officials. Before, nahihirapan kami dahil puro mga hindi kilala yung members ng team,” said Tan. “With Alfrancis, at least we have someone na kilala sa larangan ng basketball.” Chua, who led Ginebra to a runner-up finish after taking over in this season’s Commissioner’s Cup, expressed happiness over being part of “Lyceum’s family.” Lyceum also boosted its frontline with Cameroonian center Aziz Mbomiko. Another player from Cameroon, 6-foot-8 Victor Nguidjol, also wants to join the team. “He’s a walk-in applicant,” said Herc Callanta, sports director of Lyceum. Nguidjol originally intended to play for University of the Philippines in the UAAP, but had a change of heart. “He said he doesn’t want the course there (in UP),” said Callanta. “We told him that we will take him in on the condition that he settles the issue first with UP. He wants to take management and accounting here in Lyceum.” Nguidjol will have to sit out for the next two seasons before he can play for the Pirates.
