The Madison scene from Bande à part (Band of Outsiders). This is without a doubt the coolest scene ever committed to celluloid… and whatever media to which you commit things these days when you make a movie ( a disk drive, I guess?). Quentin Tarantino named his production company A Band Apart in reference to this movie, and he would be the first to admit that he will never create a scene as cool as this. I’m not a big fan of French New Wave films, or of Jean-Luc Godard, although I’ve only seen three of his films, but there’s no denying how perfect this scene is. It’s not the greatest scene ever filmed, but clearly the coolest. I anticipate no argument. I imagine it must be even cooler still if you speak French. I don’t remember what Godard was saying as narrator – something about Odile’s breasts, if I remember, and Franz feeling like he’s in a dream – but it doesn’t really matter. Including the subtitles would definitely make it less cool, but it would still be awfully damn cool. I was playing with some video editing software and decided to rip this scene from the DVD and keep it handy.
