The Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh DFC , will be the Chief Guest at the Bomber Night & Grand Reunion hosted by the Canberra Bomber Association at the Poona Club on 6 December 2014. The Marshal, the only living officer of the Indian Armed Forces currently holding five-star rank (the service Chiefs are all four-star rank officers), is 96 years old this year and still maintains a ramrod-straight posture. Till recently he reviewed parades in full uniform, and stood as required throughout the ceremonies, even when a chair was offered in deference to his age. The entire serving and retired top service brass of this old garrison town will be present to honour a man who has been an icon of the IAF for decades. The Canberra Bomber Association, an association made up of IAF personnel who served in units that operated the English Electric Canberra bomber aircraft, is hosting the event. The Association is based in Pune, which has long associations with the type. The citys Air Force Station Lohegaon, earlier Yerwada, saw the first Canberra landing in India, on its induction into the IAF in 1957. Subsequently, three different Canberra squadrons have been located here. Canberra squadrons took part in the 1965 and 1971 wars from this very airbase. The Canberra Association has members worldwide and is an active body looking after the interests & the welfare of its veterans & the spouses of the colleagues who have since gone on their eternal journey.
