The Matthean Evidence There’s too much of it. Already in his account of the crucifixion Matthew has told us (27:51) that at the moment Jesus died “the earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.” Even a reader as orthodox as William Lane Craig can’t quite credit this one, not to mention also the “great earthquake” of 28:2) —but still it can’t bolster anyone’s estimation of the evangelist’s reliability. Then there’s a bit of evidence one must credit, and may find damaging. Referring to the eleven disciples, at 28:17 Matthew informs us that at the ascension they saw him and “worshipped him.” “But,” he continues, “some doubted.” Some of the disciples doubted. Some of the disciples doubted. This implies that some of Paul’s best witnesses, possibly a majority of them, are reported by Matthew to have doubted. It implies further that some of those who were, on any reckoning best situated to know what happened and disposed to believe—that some of them doubted. So now Paul’s and others’ mentioning by name of Peter and James is cast in a new light—they may be singled out and cited because some other close followers of the lord were not so ready to sign on. And John’s story of doubting Thomas may be taken as a counter to the tradition reported by Matthew. Suppose we ask the reporter’s or historian’s usual questions: what happened? Where did it happen? Who saw it? Matthew’s reports two sightings. The first is by Mary Magdalene and “the other Mary.” Where? However far they’ve run from the tomb. There Jesus meets them and says “Chairete.” In formal English, “Hail”—thus “Hail Mary.” Literally, “rejoice.” But it’s the standard Greek word of greeting, closest equivalent in English, “hello.” The two Mary’s “worship” him—the Greek is prosekunesan, bow, crouch, crawl, kneel, prostrate—whereupon he tells them to report the news to the brothers in Galilee where they’ll soon see him, Jesus.
