The McDonalds of Africa With athletic grace, impalas are the epitome of the African antelope. When chased, the herd will erupt into a dynamic spectacle of dizzying zig-zag leaps in which the impalas will jump over and across each other as they flee. The humorous nickname above comes from the black “M” seen on their flank plus the fact so many animals eat them including leopards, eagles, baboons, pythons, and more. Even so, impala are successfully managing various threats as shown by a population estimated at two million strong.
