The Metropolitan Opera is a huge, complex operation with a budget of over $300 million and 16 unions. Four years ago its general manager, Peter Gelb, tapped his predecessor, Joseph Volpe -- who ran the place after a meteoric rise from an apprentice carpenter in the stagehands union, to lead labor negotiations. Now hes taking the role back for himself, and some unions are worried. My story, in todays paper:
