The Monuments Men tells the, until now, untold true story about a group of middle-aged art scholars who travel across Europe in an attempt to save millions of pieces of artwork from Nazi hands. After they are all assembled, the men travel to Europe, blow through basic training and embark on their quest. The movie then follows them across Europe, encountering snipers, battles and mystery surrounding the location of the missing art. George Clooney directs and stars as Frank Stokes, the leader of the group who is tasked with finding the pieces of art alongside Matt Damon as James Granger, Bill Murray as Richard Campbell, Hugh Bonneville as Donald Jefferies, John Goodman as Walter Garfield, Jean Dujardin as Jean-Claude Clermont and Bob Balaban Preston Savitz. Each actor is perfectly cast and contributes to a lot of the humor and emotion present in the story. Though the group is split up for a good deal of the story, the camaraderie between them is very believable and you get attached to them. The main threat in the story is the idea of the art being destroyed if Hitler and Nazi Germany falls, threading tension throughout the second and third acts of the movie. The cinematography is also very well done as are the few action scenes found in the second half. Cate Blanchett’s role as a French art historian who is suspicious of the efforts of the group adds a layer of intrigue, and explores the concept of Europeans being wary of what will happen once the art is recovered. Though the movie is about a war, it is rated PG-13, with moderate language, only brief instances of blood, and some smoking by the characters. There also some intense moments, such as a few side characters are suddenly killed, and when the art starts to get destroyed, but overall it’s a pretty audience friendly war movie, though not one you would take kids to see. The Monuments Men is a movie with a concept not yet covered in a major motion picture, with an engaging cast, an intriguing story and great music. It’s suitable for people who like true stories and don’t appreciate vulgar language or bloody violence. youtube/watch?v=CreneTs7sGs
