The Mountain View High School marching band, the Toros, seems to - TopicsExpress

The Mountain View High School marching band, the Toros, seems to have put on a spectacular performance while depicting the Normandy Memorial site in France. A tribute to the fallen US soldiers in WWII. Although the honoring of the fallen veterans is admirable. The overabundance of christian crosses has apparently caused some controversy. The Freedom From Religion Foundation has issued a formal complaint, but seemed to be satisfied with the school boards response assuring that there was no prayer or religious melody involved in the performance. Only military style overtures. When azcentral took a poll. The majority of the community voted for the crosses to remain in the performance. There was a portion of the community that voted against it though. Even though they are the minority. Does their opinion not count? Could the music director not have chosen a more secular Memorial site? Or one with more equal tribute to those of varying faith? Mesa AZ is a highly Christian populated community. So the pro cross vote is not a surprise. I personally live in very close proximity to this community and am a little disturbed by the lack of consideration for the minority vote. I will be contacting the Freedom From Religion Foundation to see if there is anything I can do to be a more active member of the atheist community in my area. A special thanks goes out to those who brought this to my attention.
