The New Age Movement - Overview “And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.” (Luke 21:8. See also Matthew 24:4–5 and Mark 13:5-6.) The Greek word translated "deceive" means to to cause to stray, to lead astray, or lead aside from the right way. There are a handful of people over the last 100 years or so that have been referred to as Christ. They would include Rev. Sun Myung Moon, Jose Luis de Jesus Miranda, and David Koresh. But, this would hardly qualify for the "many” that Jesus referred to. However, according to their own teachings, many people in the New Age Movement believe that they either are or can become Christ. Based on the brief information given here regarding the New Age Movement, it can be argued that the many people following these teachings and believing that they are Christ, are the “many” that Jesus referred to who will come in His name claiming to be Christ. The New Age Movement got its modern day beginnings in the late 1800s when Helena Blavatsky began receiving "divine wisdom" from various "Ascended Masters". These spirits are willing to communicate this "ageless wisdom" with anyone who is open. In the early 1900s Alice Bailey coined the phrase "New Age" as she received further instruction from the Ascended Master Djwhal Khul. He described how a hierarchy of Ascended Masters would eventually reveal themselves and establish a new order, unifying all faiths into a world religion. The New Age teaches that each person has the potential to become the Christ. They believe that the Jesus Christ of the Bible was not God, but a man who is still striving to become the Christ. Since this path to personal Christhood may take a long time, they believe in evolution and reincarnation to enable people to reach higher and higher levels of Christ consciousness. As such, they believe that there are potentially millions of people who can become Christ on some level. To assist people on their journey to personal Christhood, the New Age believes in the "I AM Presence", which is the spiritualized presence of God in every person. This spirit seeks to build a relationship with the person and help accelerate the path to full Christ consciousness. Not only will many come in Jesus Christ’s name saying “I am He”, but Luke records in 21:8 that Jesus stated that they will also say “the time has drawn near”. In context, it can be concluded that Jesus is referring to His second coming. As mentioned earlier, when Djwhal Khul was communicating with Alice Bailey between 1919 and 1949 he said that “the time will not be long” for the outpouring of the Christ principle which he claimed was the true Coming of Christ. Edgar Cayce predicted this would reach fruition in “1998-1999”. Some now believe that the Golden Age of Christ Consciousness will begin in 2013.
