The Nigerian educational curriculum is very sick and needs urgent review especially now that Biology and Economics are electives. And most of the pedagogical methods are theoretical rather than being practical. An encounter with the American curriculum reveals a lot of insight into how a little child can learn independently at a learning centre where she makes variety of choices on what has been taught. she learns to sought out problems at that tender age. She is taught to pick a book and read daily. Our nursery and primary schools lack the basic needs that make teaching and learning fun, playful and interesting. Our approach to teaching and learning has always been teacher centred and not child centred which puts the child at the centre of focus, relating her experience with the topic taught. Indeed, we really have a long way to go.
