The Northwest School District continues to keep students’ safety - TopicsExpress

The Northwest School District continues to keep students’ safety and well-being a top priority. Some in our Northwest community have raised two concerns related to Saturday’s football game versus Hazelwood West. The first concern relates to the weather and the extreme temperatures for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. The game time was changed to 10:00 a.m. to take advantage of the cooler morning temperatures as compared to the afternoon. We have also been assured by school administrators at Hazelwood West that the officials for this game will insure students are given ample opportunities to hydrate throughout the game. They have also said that additional water breaks will be allowed. These measures should provide enough relief to allow the students to participate safely. Administrators here at Northwest and Hazelwood will continue to closely monitor weather conditions. The second concern is related to the continuing unrest on West Florissant Avenue in Ferguson. This situation has garnered media attention and continues to change rapidly. However, the location of the protests is more than 8 miles away from Hazelwood West High School and there has been no organized protest located within the Hazelwood School District. In fact, students in the Hazelwood School District have not missed any school days due to the protests. As with us here in the Northwest School District, safety of all students, fans and families remain a top priority in the Hazelwood School District. Officials there have assured us that they would not have considered hosting this event if there were any signs of danger or risk for students, fans and families. They have taken several steps to ensure adequate supervision and security for this and all of their events. Officials at both Northwest High School and Hazelwood West High School are confident that our students, fans, and communities will be safe at Saturday’s football game. We encourage you to come support the Northwest Lions and show that Northwest Pride. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Jeff Taggart, Northwest High School Activities Director 636-274-0555 ext. 18760
