The Oil Road: Global Resistance to BP: From the Caspian to the Gulf Coast 7:30 PM, Friday, Oct. 4, Miller 114 This discussion promises to be very interesting! Communities living near oil reserves play an important role in the global energy future, as well as being historically subjected to repression, poverty and human rights abuses. Community campaigns demanding human rights and climate justice take different forms in Nigeria, Egypt, Azerbaijan and the Gulf Coast. But are there common approaches? How are these struggles linked up? This event features Mika Minio-Paluello and Anna Galkina of London-based group Platform, which has challenged the impacts of global oil companies for the past fifteen years, and Cherri Foytlin, co-founder of Gulf Change. They will discuss the social, ecological, political and ecological dimensions of the global oil industry and of movements of resistance to its abuses.
