The Ottoman Empire instituted a system of religious pluralism - TopicsExpress

The Ottoman Empire instituted a system of religious pluralism known as the millet system. In this system, each religious group was ruled by their own laws and their own leaders. Islamic law did not apply to non-Muslims except in legal cases involving a Muslim and a non-Muslim. Such a system was inspired by Islamic law itself, which provides for religious freedom, and allowed the Ottomans to experience relative religious harmony until the millet system was disbanded during the period of Western-style reforms in the 1800s.
