The Parable of the Growing Seed Mark 4:26-29 26 And He said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, 27 and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how. 28 For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. 29 But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.” Description: The Kingdom of God in some ways is a mystery and with a number of parables Jesus seeks to open up that mystery for us, but sometimes what He says can be a bit of a mystery. The parable of the sower identifies seeds as the Word of God. If a man was to scatter seeds on the ground it would seem like this man is a pastor or evangelist. If he is a pastor/preacher, each week he comes out and shares the Word of God with his flock and over time, like a mystery some of his flock mature into confident Christians who are well grounded in the Word and in their Christian disciplines. A pastor would not know which of his sermons really took root in his hearer’s ears and were watered and matured in their lives. Even if people were giving him feedback each week on how they like the sermon he preached, the pastor would have a hard time tracking the growth of individuals. The Christian life to maturity is really a mystery. Some people can be saved for thirty years and can be a baby in Christ and yet others can be saved just a few years and be mature. Some people hear the Gospel from their friends, perhaps they hear it once or twice from an evangelist, and the seed of the Gospel grows within them until one day there is a harvest and they are brought into the Kingdom of God. Both non Christians and Christians need to hear the Word of God. As a Christian matures hopefully they will be a better witness to other people and to be able to sow the Word of God and the witness of Christ into other people’s lives. The Bible talks of a great harvest of the wicked and a great harvest of the righteous. I guess that Jesus is waiting for many more people to be born again in last world revivals, which I believe will happen, and I guess that He is waiting for His bride to be fully mature, working together in holiness and unity. There is going to come a day when Jesus comes to harvest the world of his believers, yet the day and time remains a mystery to most of us. This little parable is hard to understand and explain for me, I hope that I have given you a little insight. Application: I guess the best thing that I can say about this parable and suggest to you is not to worry about your Christian life and your maturity and leaning process. Jesus promised us that the Holy Spirit would lead us into all truth. You might not see yourself maturing in the faith, but God is doing a work in you each day, and each time you spend time with Him. One way to mature is to read books written by mature people and mix with these sort of people. God bless you and grow you into His image.
