The PolyU School of Design is organising a Design Education Conference in December and we are pleased to offer 30 complimentary tickets to students of The Hong Kong Institute of Education. Students could simply register through this link, confirmation email will be sent to successful registrants. ACTION! – Doing Design Education We must do in order to learn, just as we must learn in order to do. Designers are doers. Beyond the “skills” and “knowledge” of the respective design disciplines, design education needs to prepare students with the tactical and interpersonal capacity to navigate the world in which they are designing and construct the positive change that they are envisioning. Learning designerly ways of acting in the world involves developing positive habits, honing tacit knowledge and rehearsing ways of conscious action through modes of teaching and learning that transcend traditional “classroom” and “studio” modes of learning. Jointly organised by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design and Hong Kong Design Institute (member of VTC Group), the 10th annual DesignEd Asia Conference will be held in Hong Kong on 2 & 3 December 2014 at Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai. With this year’s theme “ACTION! – Doing Design Education”, prominent design educators from around the world will be attending to discuss different aspects of an action-oriented, experience-oriented, constructivist-grounded view of design education, involving doing the “real thing” in “real time” in the “real world”. There will be a 2-day programme featuring presentations, panel discussions, workshops and paper presentations. The following distinguished design educators and designers will present at the conference: Guest of Honour & Opening Keynote • Tony FRY Visiting Scholar, University of Cincinnati/ the United States & Adjunct Professor, Queensland College of Art, Griffith University/ Australia Design in Time Design in Time will be presented and argued from three perspectives: first, the notion of time as event rather than measure; second, the designed and designing understood in the medium of time; and, third, how think design action in the critical moment of now - a moment of pressing localised global problems and challenges. The case to be made will be grounded in situated examples of action and with an exposition of the concept of ‘chronophobia’. Closing Keynote • Thomas MAGNANTI President, Singapore University of Technology and Design/ Singapore & Institute Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology/ the United States Educating Technology-Grounded Leaders for Design-Driven Innovation Technology and design-driven education has evolved over hundreds of years, with the emergence of particular disciplinary and departmental structures and teaching paradigms. Are these the best approaches in today’s world? How should a contemporary technical-based university be structured? What degrees should it offer and how should it be delivering education? Using MIT and the development of the Singapore University of Technology and Design as reference points, I will touch upon these issues in the context of the changing landscape of higher education.
