The Power Is In Your Hands! Get Involved in Global Handwashing Day! It is time once again to celebrate Global Handwashing Day on October 15. Here are some simple things you can do to get involved and informyour colleagues, neighbors, and friends about this important day. Below are activities and links to resources to help you celebrate the day. Please take some time to spread the word and not germs – WASH your hands and encourage others to do the same. Virtual and Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more) • The first ever virtual Global Handwashing Day celebration will take place via Google Hangout on October 15! Be sure to join in the online celebration. • Social Media Toolkit: Download the 2013 Global Handwashing Day Social Media Toolkit for sample tweets, ways to engage with followers, and more! • Twitter: Our official hashtag for Global Handwashing Day is #iwashmyhands. Tweet a #iwashmyhands message each day starting today. • Instagram: Enter a picture once a week in the Global Handwashing Day Instagram contest. Be sure to check Facebook and Twitter to see if you were selected as a weekly winner. • Facebook: Become a fan of Global Handwashing Day at facebook/globalhandwashingday • World Wash Up Game: On October 15th, play the World Wash Up game to help us trend on Twitter. Brown Bag Lunch • Materials needed:Global Handwashing Day PowerPoint adapted with your logo and other organization specific information, handwashing key messages and statisticalhandouts • Activity:Reserve a space and invite people from within or outside your organization to learn about handwashing. Lead a group discussion on WASH and other development sectors; the importance of incorporating handwashing and hygiene into school programs; etc. Use the adapted PowerPoint to present the health effects of handwashing and stimulate discussion on the topic. HandwashingDemo (in a public place) • Materials needed:buckets, soap, tippy tap or pitchers of water, handwashing instructions, fact sheets on handwashing, stories from the field (from globalhandwashing.org or your own organization) • Activity:Put up posters and publicize the demo the week prior. Set up a handwashing station in a public area of your organization such as a lobby, kitchen, or conference room. Invite colleagues to view or participate in the demo on October 15th. Share stories from your own organization about Global Handwashing Day activities from field offices. Provide information verbally or written. This may also be used as a way to spread the word about a Brown Bag Lunch or other event. Bathroom Signs • Materials needed: Fun bathroom signs about handwashing and Global HandwashingDay.
