The Professors Friday Shot tonights under the covers .... This song was originally written by a chap named Bobby Troup in 1946, and was recorded that same year by Nat King Cole ..... Of course its been covered famously by Cuck Berry and the Rolling Stones, its even been covered by Depeche Mode and Glen Frey - its been all over the place. One of the interesting stories surrounding its origins is that Troupe actually had the idea for the song while he was driving from Pittsburg to LA and the lyrics, which are basically just about his drive, came from his feelings of the freedom of being able to drive that route in an automobile - this was all pretty exciting stuff in 1946 .... Troupe explained in an interview that tune and the hook line get your kicks on Route 66 came to him pretty easily but he was struggling with the rest of the lyrics and so more in frustration than anything else he just filled up the song with a list of the towns and cities along the route. 1946, Nat King Cole ...
