The Red Herring is when, in an argument, someone uses a plausible statement that seemingly supports their position but is irrelevant to the core issue. This could take the form of involving other incidences or even just outright changing the subject. For example, if a customer at a restaurant complains to a manager about their under-cooked steak, it would be a Red Herring for the manager to mention how well done the fries are. The core issue remains unresolved, and as an unintended consequence other factors are then pulled into the disagreement; thereby making it worse. We are all guilty of the Red Herring at one point or another. Pointing it out as politely as possible is usually the best way to solve it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_herring
