The Scots vote day after tomorrow. Personally, I could care less - TopicsExpress

The Scots vote day after tomorrow. Personally, I could care less whichever way the people -- and the land -- I have nothing whatsoever to do with choose to go. As an unaffected, independent observer, though, unable to escape the news bombardment of the Scottish referendum, two intriguing thoughts cross my mind. First, its absolutely fascinating to see people being allowed to peacefully choose the fate of their nationhood in a direct, free referendum; whereas thousands upon thousands of people in other parts of the world are being killed or persecuted in other evil ways just for having similar aspirations. Second, on a much deeper note, I think an issue as sacred as national identity should purely be a matter of the heart. This is not part of periodic elections wherein if one one feels s/he voted the wrong way, one can hope to correct it by voting the other way in the next elections. What if the Scots vote to go independent (or remain with the UK) on Thursday, and few years down the line they find out they were wrong? The referendum cannot be undone. Economic issues, which seem to (wrongly, IMO) dominate the prevailing pre-referendum debate, are for periodic elections, not for once-in-a-lifetime referendum. I hope the people who will be voting (and I read somewhere that 2000 Nepalis residing in Scotland are eligible to vote too!) will vote with their genuine feelings, true to their hearts, regardless of peripheral, rectifiable issues like economy. It should be about the heart, not the money. Once you decide on your identity purely by way of your heart, you will find a way for economic survival, or even prosperity.
