The South African Weather Service annually celebrates World Meteorological Day with the rest of the world on 23 March. The day highlights contribution of national meteorological and hydrological services to the satefy and well-being of society and commemorates the entry force of the convetion that created the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in 1950. The theme for World Meteorological Day 2014, weather and climate: engaging youth is particularly appropriate to South Africans as we celebrate successes of the past 20 years of our democracy and look forward to the creation of a vibrant sustainable economy through the NDPs vision 2030. The South African Weather Service acknowledges that todays youth have inherited the current global weather and climate problems of the world and will have even more challenging climate issues to deal with in future. It is therefore important that we develop an understanding of the current issues and develop a high level of weather-readiness amongst them. With the commemoration date falling on a Sunday this year, the day will be celebrated on Wednesday, 19 March 2014 in the Lichtenburg area. The choce of this venue was informed by the recent droughts and flooding which affected the North West province. As part of this years theme, the South African Weather Service has embarked on Adopt a school campaign , which will see the organisation bringing weather and climate issues closer to our learners. The Baitshoki High School in the Lichtenburg area, one of the educational circuits well performing school, will be adopted by SAWS on 19 March 2014, where a donation of technological equipment and support will be made. Furthermore, an event empowering invited learners, educators, disaster manager, the farming community and others will be held in Lichtenburg Town Hall, where presentations on recent severe weather events will be done. An exhibition of the SAWS work will assist to further enlighten the public and our youth on the importance of national meteorological services. #SAWS# @saweatherservic
