The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer came online today and as a passionate TMNT fan, I was expecting the worst. This wasnt the worst, but it does look to be a rather charmless affair. TMNT is a ridiculous concept that was intended as a parody of the 1980s Daredevil comics. As the series found immediate success, the storytelling across the many arms of the franchise came to focus on the family of the four brothers. While the jokes in the shows/movies/comics were amusing enough, it was really about the heart and charm that came from watching these four brothers with disparate personalities come together to overcome obstacles. Those relationships dont seem entirely absent from this reboot film, but it also doesnt look like theres all that much trace of it. Now, lets not pretend that the original animated series or even the live action films were very good. While kind of charming, they were also really terrible. Anyone claiming that Michael Bay is raping their childhoods need to acknowledge that in their childhoods, the fans had bought into media that was largely rubbish. That said, anyone who is wanting TMNT that looks considerably better than this, I strongly encourage people to check out the current IDW TMNT comics or the current Nickelodeon cartoon. Both of which are crisp, fun, and engaging. Were living in a golden age for the TMNT, but this film doesnt look likely to be part of that.
